EpiData Project - Background

The project is conducted in partnership with the EpiData Association of Denmark, the owner of EpiData intellectual property.  Used around the world, EpiData is a software suite designed to assist epidemiologists, public health investigators and others to manage and analyze data in the field.  It is also used as a training tool internationally, including the Public Health Agency of Canada's (PHAC) Canadian Field Epidemiology Program.

APHEO supports and influences the further development of EpiData to improve its utility in the field and as a training tool.  Through a more open architecture, EpiData will be more adaptable for use by trainers and practitioners in Canada and elsewhere.  APHEO  contributes to several stages of the EpiData redevelopment project, including determinations of user requirements, prototype development and evaluation, testing using real public health data resources and the application of Canadian case studies. The expected results are improved EpiData functions that are well suited to the practice of public health in Canada and to training programs aimed at students of public health and continuing education modules for Canadian practitioners.

The project produces test versions and documentation of EpiData software and Canadian case studies to illustrate the management and analysis of data in the field and evaluation reports on the functionality of new versions.  The ultimate project goal is for the software, documentation and case studies to be used by public health practitioners and trainers in Canada to complement existing surveillance software, analysis software and training tools.
